An absolute embarrassment.
A shameful performance.
The Eagles collapsed and lost 24-21 to the Dallas Cowboys in an epic meltdown Sunday. The Eagles (8-3) led 21-0 in the second quarter.
I don’t even know where to start.
From turnovers to lack of discipline, and even another pitiful display of play calling by Kevin Patullo, the Eagles lost a game that should have been another win. It was almost reminiscent of their loss against the Denver Broncos. Just a collapse that was inexcusable.
The Eagles actually started out great.
The Eagles scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead. At that point, the offense appeared to be clicking.
Then Reed Blankenship intercepted a pass in the end zone when Dallas finally put together a nice drive and, really, should have walked away with at least a field goal.
What a confidence booster to add to the lead, right?
Well, you would think.
On third-and-7, Patullo dialed up a great play and threw a short pass on the left side to DeVonta Smith, which fell incomplete. (That was sarcasm, if you didn’t pick up on that).
Listen, incomplete passes happen.
That’s part of the game.
But why does Patullo keep dialing up short passes on third-and-long situations? Why isn’t Jalen Hurts taking more shots down the field? It’s crazy, right? It’s that way every game, and it’s not all on Hurts. Patullo calls the plays!!!
Hurts protects the ball and doesn’t always take chances, which is both a good and bad thing. He only has one interception this season, and it’s hard to win games when you turn the ball over. Hurts doesn’t do that, so that’s a positive. Still, it would be nice to take those deep shots.
But turnovers do hurt, but let’s ease into that issue, which only added to the mistake-filled and disaster of a performance.
After that disgrace of a drive, the Cowboys scored to cut their deficit to 21-7. OK, fine! You weren’t going to shutout Dak Prescott at home.
That takes us to the second half.
The Eagles punted on their next three drives, including going three-and-out two times. Then Jake Elliott missed a field goal, which was huge. That was basically a turning point in the game as Dallas marched down the field to score again.
Then here come the turnovers.
Hurts put together a great drive, making some good throws and runs to get to the Dallas 28-yard-line. After a penalty set them back, they faced a second-and 17. Saquon Barkley then fumbled, which is not his nature. He doesn’t fumble much, and I don’t want to blame him. That was Barkley’s first fumble of the season. However, that drive could have at least led to a field goal, if not a TD.
That could have been the difference.
Dallas then responded with a TD to tie the game.
Turnovers are a killer.
The Eagles defense later forced a punt, and Xavier Gipson fumbled at the Eagles’ 8-yard-line. Again, the Eagles’ defense came up and stopped the Cowboys, even on fourth-and-goal at the Eagles’ 1. Why Dallas went for that instead of kicking a go-ahead field goal, I don’t know.
But it seemed like the Eagles had some life.
But that was short lived.
On third-and-2, Hurts dropped back and was sacked. It was a bad sack to take, but why not run Barkley? Where is the run game this season? Is this really on Patullo, or is the offense not the same as last season? Barkley finished with just 10 carries for 22 yards.
Ten carries?? For one of the best running backs in the league? What are we doing here?? Feed him!! He was an MVP candidate last year. We all know his talent level, and he isn’t being used.
That third-and-2 situation should have been a run, and to blame Hurts for that sack is asinine. He finished with 289 yards, a 99.2 passer rating and accounted for all three TDs.
Enough with the Hurts blame. Yes, he missed some throws. He had Dallas Goedert open on a play this game that he totally missed. He made some bad throws. If anything, blame him for that. Blame him for not reading the field correctly, but he can’t be blamed for Patullo’s atrocious calls.
Yes, he can’t take the sack there. But where is the faith in the running game? It’s really troubling, and needs to be addressed. But they are 11 games into the season, so if it’s not fixed now, will it change going forward? There’s still time, but not a lot.
After Prescott’s 24-yard pass to George Pickens, the game was over. And you can’t blame the defense because they stepped up all game, and with key injuries, like Reed Blankenship and Moro Ojomo. Despite those key injuries, Vic Fangio and his unit did all they could.
They gave Patullo and the offense multiple opportunities, but nothing materialized.
Twenty-four unanswered points!
The Eagles are supposed to be favorites to go back to the Super Bowl, but I just don’t know if that can happen with Patullo calling plays. It simply can’t happen, unless things drastically change.
What happened Sunday was a catastrophe.
The Eagles have not blown a 21-point in the second half in 25 years. I just don’t understand how the Eagles could score on their first three drives and never come close to scoring another touchdown.
This is on the coaching staff, namely Patullo.
The offense looked so good to start the game. Play calling appeared to be great and unpredictable, compared to the same old calls that we are used to seeing. They looked unstoppable, but after the first three drives things went back to normally.
Predictable.
Stagnant.
Sluggish.
Those first three drives resulted in 21 points, 192 yards and 12 first downs. After that, just 107 yards on their final eight possessions.
Just an all-around pathetic performance from the offense.
Patullo cannot keep calling plays, but Nick Sirianni will keep defending him. Sirianni hired and promoted Patullo.
Patullo probably won’t get fired or lose play-calling duties now. Maybe after the season, but not now. I just don’t see it.
However, if Patullo keeps calling plays, the Eagles have no hope to make the Super Bowl again. And that is sad because they will most likely win the NFC East. Again, Patullo isn’t the only problem. However, in my opinion, he is the biggest issue right now.
The offense clicked last season with essentially the same core. Why? Well, Kellen Moore is just a better offensive mind and was way more clever.
It was nice to see AJ Brown get more involved. He finished with 110 yards on eight receptions and a touchdown. Smith added 89 yards on six receptions. Barkley was used a lot in the passing game.
That was nice, but stats don’t always equate to success or wins.
The passing game was still inconsistent, which is concerning. I mean, one more touchdown and the Eagles probably would have won.
And just losing to Dallas in general makes this loss even more tough to swallow. Prescott is now 18-2 against NFC East opponents at home. He hasn’t lost to an NFC East rival at home since 2017. It would have been nice to end that streak, and the opportunity was there. The Eagles just collapsed and blew a lead, like the Denver game.
The Eagles do not have much time to get ready for the Chicago Bears on Black Friday. But they better figure something out because the Bears have been no joke this season. It’s far from an easy win. But maybe being at home is what the Eagles need to get that rebound win.
