The Philadelphia Eagles hired Vic Fangio to be their defensive coordinator Thursday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Fangio was the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins this season. The Dolphins ranked 10th in yards allowed and No. 22 in points under Fangio.
The Dolphins had an injured defense for most of the season, and he still did a good job with the unit. They lost 26-7 to the Chiefs in the Wild Card round, but it’s hard to totally pin a lot of the Dolphins’ losses on the defense. The Eagles beat the Dolphins 31-17 on Oct. 22.
Fangio became available Wednesday after he parted ways with the Dolphins because he wanted to move closer to his home. He is from the Scranton area.
Fangio has a well-established reputation, which is important.
Fangio has also been a defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. He served as the Denver Broncos head coach from 2019-2021, and had a 19-30 record.
The Eagles needed someone with experience calling plays, unlike Sean Desai. The team needed some to come right in and get the defense ready to succeed. The Eagles do NOT have time to wait around for an inexperienced play caller to “find their way.”
Fangio briefly worked as a defensive consultant in 2022 with the Eagles. With Jonathan Gannon as coordinator, the unit almost set the franchise record for sacks and won the NFC title.
We all know how this year went under Desai, and it only got worse with Matt Patrica. The Eagles ranked 26th in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed.
Fangio was the 2018 Assistant Coach of the Year and brings nearly 30 years of experience as an NFL defensive coordinator.
Nick Sirianni wants to be more of an CEO-type of head coach, so bringing in an established coordinator like Fangio is smart. Hopefully the new offensive coordinator will also be a good fit.
All in all, this was a good move for the Eagles.
