We have good news good for once!!
Sean Desai has reportedly been fired after the Eagles’ historic collapse. Nick Sirianni did the firing, which basically indicates Sirianni will be the coach next season. Sirianni would not be involved in coaching decisions if he was not coming back. But an official decision on his future has not made.
But the decision to move on from Desai should not surprising at all. Desai was stripped of his play-calling duties after the Eagles fell to 10-3.
The Eagles defense was atrocious, especially in the secondary. The line, which was supposed to be the strong point of the defense, continued to get worse down the stretch. In my opinion, this was the worse defense I have ever witness. I’m only 31, and I know most older fans have seen worse, but this defense was so bad. I honestly cannot recall a unit this horrible.
No one could tackle, the coverage was so bad. They could not stop anyone on third down. It was a complete mess.
Desai was hired after Jonathan Gannon left for Arizona. The Eagles’ defense kind of collapsed under Desai, but it just got worse under Matt Patrica, who will also leave the Eagles after wanting to explore other options, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.
The Eagles went 1-4 with Patricia as defensive coordinator. I don’t know if Desai would’ve done better if he stayed, but either way he deserved to be let go.
I hope Brian Johnson is next, too. Even Jalen Hurts said after the season there was some stuff behind the scenes he was not totally happy with. That had to be because of the offensive play-calling, which I think held Hurts and the entire offense back.
Johnson did nothing special and was too predictable. I can’t believe teams actually wanted to interview Johnson. Like, take him, please!! The offense had the weapons to be a dangerous threat for any defense. The Eagles had the offense to dial-up so many different schemes to hurt opposing defenses, yet they consistently did the same plays. Reportedly, Hurts audibled out of a lot of Johnson’s calls late in the season.
That’s on Johnson, and hopefully he’s the next domino to fall.
As for Sirianni, I think he should stay here for one more season. See what happens with new coordinators. After all, he led the Eagles to the playoffs in three straight seasons to start his head coaching career, including a Super Bowl appearance. Let’s give him one more season.
But, thankfully, Desai is gone… and hopefully more changes are on the horizon.
