The misery is officially over.
The Eagles closed out their season with a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round Monday. In an epic collapse, they lost six of their last seven games.
The Eagles had three straight opportunities on offense in the third quarter to score the tying touchdown. The defense made two stops, and the offense stalled, including having a safety.
It was a fitting end to a disaster of a season.
To me, any hope to win this game ended after the Eagles’ first possession. On third-and-2 at their own 42-yard line, Jalen Hurts throws a deep incomplete pass to Dallas Goedert. Who called that? All you needed was 2 yards. That wasn’t the first time this season they made a play call like that. It’s incredibly frustrating and annoying.
After that, the Buccaneers marched right down the field and extended their lead to 10-0. That was enough…. The lead became 13-0 and 16-3.
When the Eagles finally did get a touchdown, a Hurts pass to Goedert, they went for two after a Tampa Bay penalty. I don’t know why… take the extra point and make it a six-point game.
But it really didn’t matter.
The Eagles weren’t coming back.
Just under a year ago, the Eagles played in the Super Bowl. They started her season 10-1 and Hurts was in the MVP discussion. When they beat the Bills, it seemed like the Eagles were going to do something again.
The 49ers game started the downfall, and it continued to get worse and worse.
Nothing more can be said about the game. They put together another embarrassing performance. They deserved to lose.
The only question is what’s next for the Eagles…
For starters, Brian Johnson, Matt Patricia and Sean Desai should be gone. I still don’t know about Nick Sirianni. Will he get fired? I mean, anything is possible. But after just making the Super Bowl, along with three straight playoff appearances, I think it might be premature. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s fired…. Jeffrey Lurie doesn’t fool around. Ask Doug Pederson. He was canned after WINNING a Super Bowl.
Howie Rosemsn did the Eagles no favors by not prioritizing the linebacker position. He needs to focus on defense in the draft and offense. And the Eagles may lose Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham.
So, focusing on defense is an absolute must.
It’s sad that Jason Kelce is going out like this. He told his teammates after the game that he is retiring. He goes down as a Philly legend. What a career! It’s just a real shame that it ended on this note.
This season will go down as one of the worst collapses in Philly sports history. It hurts, but we have the Flyers and Sixers, and both won Monday.
