Embarrassing, lackluster and sloppy are three words to describe the Eagles’ performance in Dallas on Sunday night.
You could probably think of a lot more.
The offense and defense were sluggish and inefficient in their 33-13 loss to Dallas. The lack of urgency was troubling.
Before getting to the negatives, and there are a lot, let’s try to look at the “positives.”
Before the Eagles started this stretch with the Cowboys, the Chiefs, the Bills, the Niners and then Dallas again, I thought the Eagles would go 3-2. I would’ve been happy with that. But after starting 3-0 and losing two consecutive games, to teams the Eagles will probably see come playoff time, I am not happy. But there aren’t many Eagles’ fans who are too happy either.
The positive here is the Eagles are better than these last two weeks. We have seen it against the Dolphins, the Chiefs, the Bills and the first time against Dallas. There is a better team in there, I just don’t know where it went. There should be no reason the offense only scores six points or even just 19 against the 49ers.
The team we saw the first half of the season is in that locker room, but the Eagles are playing with zero urgency right now. They played with no will, in my opinion. They looked uninspired.
Nick Sirianni has to find a way to wake up his team. He has to find a way to build confidence, because they definitely aren’t playing with any confidence at all.
Listen, it was a tough stretch. The Eagles are probably very tired. It was a tough last five games. But that cannot be an excuse. They simply did not show up, and it’s a problem.
The Eagles finish the season with Seattle, the Giants twice and Arizona— all losing teams. These are games the Eagles “should” win (if they don’t, shame on them) and build back some confidence.
That’s all the positives I could think of right now.
Now… the negatives.
The defense was atrocious. But it’s been bad the last few weeks. I’m more upset with the offense. Both play calling and execution.
Let’s start with the turnovers. Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith… they got to hold on to the ball better. Those two completions were going to be good gains, and turning it over was not an option. Smith and Brown messed up there. And Hurts… that was his 15th turnover this season. His fumble came after an 11-yard run that would have put the Eagles on Dallas’ 9-yard line. Dallas had just scored. The Eagles probably could have tied the game 7-7, but instead Dallas went down and got a FG to go up 10-0.
The Eagles got a FG on the next drive to make it 10-3. But, please, tell me why on third-and-5 from Dallas’ 34 would Hurts air it out to Brown in the end zone? Why? A 10-0 game… Early in the second quarter. Why? Did Brian Johnson call that play? I assume so. But why? You just needed five yards. A simple outside or slant pass would have better. Brown could have (and maybe should have) made that catch, but that’s beside the point. There are just many more examples of how the play calling is really a serious. There is so much talent on this offense. The calls are holding the Eagles back, I think. Something has to change, and fast! Johnson should be on the clock because this offense should not be scoring six points and struggling to find the end zone.
Braden Mann probably gave Eagles’ fans the most to cheer about Sunday with his fake-punt pass to Olamide Zaccheus. And the Eagles only got a FG out of that trick play to keep the drive alive.
To me, the offense deserves MORE blame than the defense. The Eagles would have only had six points if it wasn’t for Fletcher Cox’s strip and Jalen Carter’s recovery and TD run.
The defense allowed just nine points in the second half. Dallas led 27-13 and the Eagles were driving to possibly make it 27-20, but they turned it over on downs.
Hurts wasn’t that great, going 18 for 27 for 197 yards. He did not really have the performance we are used to seeing from him. The offense was just bad for the second straight week.
But so was the defense.
The Eagles allowed the 49ers to score on six straight drives to end their game. On Sunday night, the Eagles allowed Dallas to score on their first four drives before forcing a punt.
So the Eagles did not stop a team for 10 straight drives the first quarter in the 49ers game to the third quarter in the Dallas game.
That’s really bad.
From Week 1 to 7, the Eagles defense ranked seventh in the NFL. They had allowed an average of about 21 points and 290 yards. Now? They are one of the worst the last few weeks, having allowed 330-plus yards per game. The last three games they have allowed 30-plus points.
Again, that’s really bad.
The Cowboys have now won 15 straight games at home (the Eagles are 0-6 their last six games in Dallas, losing by an average of 17 points).
Maybe Dallas is just a good home team. But it was more about the Eagles making too many mistakes and playing very sloppy.
What bothers me more is the Eagles are now the fifth seed. Dallas has the tiebreaker over the Eagles (for now) in the division, and the 49ers have the tiebreaker in the NFC. Dallas could lose either to the Bills or the Dolphins. But the Eagles may need to win out, and the way they are playing now, I just don’t know about that. And even the Eagles do win out, that would not guarantee the NFC East. The Eagles would need the Niners to lose one or two games. The only game they may lose is against the Ravens in a couple weeks. They definitely won’t lose to the Cardinals this Sunday.
The Eagles have to win out. Seattle is going to be desperate, so that’s not an easy win. If the Eagles don’t wake up, it might not be pretty.
Hopefully there’s a lot of adjustments this week and self-evaluating.
