Rob Thomson will be the Philadelphia Phillies’ manager for at least two more seasons.
The Phillies signed Thomson on Monday to a one-year contract extension through the 2025 season. Thompson led the Phillies to back-to-back NL Championship Series appearances, and the World Series in 2022.
Thomson has a 155-118 record since taking over the franchise.
This season, the Phillies finished 90-72 under Thomson. It was their first 90-win season since 2011.
In October, Thomson became only the third manager in MLB history to win 18 of his first 25 postseason games. The others were Casey Stengel and Joe McCarthy, both Hall of Fame members.
The Phillies should be primed for another World Series run in 2024 under Thomson.
The Phillies signed Aaron Nola to a seven-year deal last month, and return Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner
Thompson was on the verge of retirement a couple years ago until he was promoted to manager.
This was a no-brainer move for the Phillies. Sure, some of Thomson bullpen and other decisions have been questionable, but overall he has done a solid job.
It was tough being up 2-0 in the NLCS and losing, and he gets some of that blame, but let’s not forget the players did not show up, either. Schwarber, Turner, Harper and Castellanos went 5-for-53 (.094) with 22 strikeouts and only two RBIs in the games they lost in the NLCS. The only thing I can really blame him for is putting Craig Kimbrel in again in Game 4 after what happened in Game 3.
But, again, Thomson has been a good manager overall. He deserved to get that extension and, maybe if the Phillies do well in 2024, he might be asked to stay until 2026.
Along with Thomson, the Phillies announced Monday the addition of two hitting coaches— Dustin Lind and Rafael Peña.
