There was no comeback this time.
The San Francisco 49ers scored on six straight drives en route to a 42-19 victory Sunday over the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
This was ugly.
The Eagles could not stop the 49ers defensively, and offensively the Eagles just could not make anything happen.
The Eagles were arguably due for a loss. They weren’t going to win every game. But this loss was both horrible and embarrassing. It would be one thing to lose in a valiant effort, but did the Eagles even give an effort? The Eagles did not come to play. They showed nothing. It was a lackluster performance.
The game actually started out pretty well. The defense stopped the Niners on their first two drives. But what happened after that? There weren’t any adjustments on defense, and the 49ers continued to have their way with Sean Desai’s unit.
The Eagles only scored 19 points on offense, and that was an issue, too. But even a couple defensive stops could’ve have kept the game much close than it was.
But before we get to the game, let’s focus on what’s ahead and why this loss could be an issue.
The Eagles (10-2) travel to the Dallas Cowboys (9-3), who have won the last 14 straight games at home. If the Eagles lose that game, they are tied. That’s the bigger issue, to me. The Eagles weren’t going to win every game during this stretch. It was great to beat the Cowboys, the Chiefs and the Bills. But the Eagles had a big opportunity— and at home— to create some cushion. But now, the Cowboys, Niners, and Lions are 9-3 and banging down the Eagles’ door.
Next week is an arguably must win.
Now… onto this game. Man, I mean this was just awful. A poor performance all-around.
Brock Purdy finished with 314 yards and four touchdowns. Deebo Samuel, who did all that trash talking in the offseason , had 116 yards and two TDs. Christian McCaffrey rushed for 96 yards and had a score.
The Eagles allowed 456 total yards of offense.
Not good!!
Now, let’s get to the offense. It’s hard to completely blame them… but 19 points?
The Eagles drove down to the 8 and the 14 yard lines on their first two drives and had to settle for field goals.
After the first quarter, they outgained the 49ers 124 to -6….. NEGATIVE SIX!! The Eagles did great early, in my opinion. But they didn’t take advantage. They did not put their foot on the pedal. They really should have led 14-0 or at least 10-0 off the bat.,
It was just a collapse.
The offense definitely had opportunities to stay in the game, in spite of the defense. Even when it was 28-13, the Eagles had to punt. Really, the momentum was with the 49ers since halftime, and Eagles just could not take command.
They ran the ball just nine times with their running backs (D’Andre Swift led with six). They need to run more. Yes, they were behind, but when it was still a one or two possession game, you should still run the ball.
But this is just a regular-season loss.
The Eagles still have a lot of season left , and an important game with the Cowboys on Sunday night. The Eagles really have to win that game.
The hope is they are angry after this loss—- at home, nonetheless. Next week is for not only the division, but possibility the first seed.
The Eagles need to put this loss behind them, as painful and frustrating as it was, and just focus on Dallas.
Next week is truly a must win.
