It was not even close to perfect.

An already banged up defense that lost even more pieces during the game Sunday tried to help the Eagles remain undefeated, but four turnovers, mainly an interception by Jalen Hurts with under two minutes left, gave the New York Jets a 20-14 victory.

The Eagles (5-1) are now 12-1 against the Jets in the all-time series.

The offense did not show up Sunday, finishing with four turnovers. The Eagles struggled to get points against a Jets defense missing Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, arguably two of top defensive players on their team.

After leading 14-3, the Eagles just could not make anything happen against a team they should have beat.

The Eagles’ last seven drives were a fumble, back-to-back punts, an interception, missed field goal, interception and a turnover on downs to basically end the game.

And why was D’Andre Swift not used? Hurts had 45 passing attempts. And after Lane Johnson left, Jack Driscoll was not any help. The Jets just brought pressure and he could not stop it. I don’t get why Hurts kept stepping back to throw. The coaching should have dialed up more running plays. Running the ball 14 times against a defense that ranked low in run defense was ridiculous.

And speaking of coaching, why did Hurts even throw at the end there? They already got the first down. Again… where were the running plays?

The Eagles had ZERO takeaways on defense, so that was an issue, too. But the defense played well, overall. With all the struggles on offense, the dense held the Jets to FGs … until the end, and that was only because of Hurts’ THIRD interception. It’s hard to pin this loss on the defense.

A team cannot win having four turnovers… The Eagles handed the Jets the win. It’s as simple as that. The Eagles did not look like they were ready or prepared.

It was an atrocious effort, and mainly by the offense. The defense was already missing Darius Slay and Jalen Carter. Then Eli Ricks and Reed Blankenship went out with injuries. The defense still made plays, like Haason Reddick with 2.5 sacks and Josh Sweet with one.

The banged-up defense tried, but a healthy and supposedly dangerous offense did not set up at all.

This would have been an important win for the Eagles, too The Cleveland Browns defeated the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers 19-17, and a win would have helped the Eagles in the NFC standings by giving them a one-game cushion on the 49ers. That would have been huge because the Eagles could lose again next week to the Miami Dolphins, who are the highest-scoring team in the NFL and have about 3,000 yards through six weeks.

The 49ers will most likely beat the Minnesota Vikings, so IF the Eagles lose again, at least they could have both been 6-1. But not now. The 49ers could be 6-1, and the Eagles could be 6-2. The Eagles better fix wherever is going on before next week, or they are in trouble.

Back to the Eagles devastating loss…

The Eagles’ first drive was amazing, chewing up 9 minutes, 47 seconds and scoring when in the red zone, an issue this season the Eagles did not have last season.

The Eagles had a turnover on the next drive, but the Jets did not score off the mistake. The Eagles had not allowed a team to score off of their turnovers this season, well until before the half after Swift’s fumble when the Jets were able to get a field goal to make the score 14-9.

The Eagles were driving before that fumble, and could added to their 14-6 lead. It was a good thing the defense held them to only a field, but those untimely mistake and cannot happen going forward against better teams. And that goes for Hurts.

But Swift did do something positive in the first half. He had incredible catch and score to give the Eagles a 14-3 lead! A huge catch and run by A.J. Brown set up the touchdown, making up for his missed deep pass from Hurts on that same drive. That was probably the most exciting few plays of the game.

The offense did not get much better in the second half. DeVonta Smith dropped a long pass when Hurts got him in stride

It was just an awful performance. No one on offense played a good game at all, well I guess an argument can be made for Brown as he has another big game on the stat sheet.

But the Eagles need to fix something or they will be in for a long day next Sunday night against Miami.
