The Philadelphia Eagles used a strong second half Sunday en route to a 23-14 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
Let me rephrase that…. The Eagles were absolutely dominant in the second half, especially defensively.
The Eagles are now 19-3 in their last 22 regular-season games (14-3 in 2022) and 25-5 in their last 30 games. The Eagles improved to 5-0 for the second straight season, the first time in franchise history they have been undefeated through Week 5 in back-to-back seasons. Winning has just become an expectation for the Eagles
The Rams are tough on offense, and I thought this game was going to be high scoring. With the way the Eagles defense has been playing, especially in the secondary, and with Cooper Kupp back, I thought the Rams passing game would be a problem. But it wasn’t, especially in the second half.
The Eagles led 17-14 at halftime, but shut out the Rams in the second half. The Eagles gave up just 50 yards of offense in the second half until the final 30 seconds. It was just great to watch. The Eagles made adjustments at half, and took away everything that the Rams did right in the first half.
Say what you will about Matt Stafford, but he is a Super Bowl winning quarterback. He has had success in this league. The Rams have top players in Tutu Atwell, Tyler Higbee and Puka Nacua. This Rams team was arguably the best squad the Eagles played this season, and the Eagles performed perfectly.
The Eagles secondary is relatively young. Josh Jobe? Eli Ricks? Those guys did not have much experience at all before this season. Same for Mario Goodrich. The coverage really turned around in the second half, and that is saying something against a strong offense like the Rams.
Jalen Carter and Haason Reddick each had two sacks. Reddick added two QB hits, and Carter and Josh Sweet each finished with two. Reed Blankenship led with seven tackles, and Nick Morrow added five. The Eagles finished with 45 tackles. The Eagles covered and pressured well, especially in the second half.
This brings us to the offense.
The Eagles finished with 453 yards but only 23 points. They could have (and probably should have) scored more, but they won the time of possession, which kept the Rams offense off the field. The Eagles had the ball for about 38 minutes, and put together long drives. They burned a lot of clock, which made the Rams defense tired, and that was evident with the way the Eagles moved the ball.
This was a win for the offense.
Jalen Hurts? Very awesome! He again had an interception, but he finished 25 for 38 for 303 yards and a touchdown. Hurts wasn’t sacked once, and he spread the ball around.
A.J. Brown had six receptions for 127 yards, and Dallas Goedert had eight receptions for 117 yards and a TD. D’Andre Swift had six receptions for 38 yards. Swift also had 70 rushing yards.
Still, if you have to pick one negative from the game, it has to be the Eagles red zone troubles. It hasn’t been pretty in the red zone this year. The Eagles had drives stall the Rams’ 21-, 16- and 8-yard lines Sunday.
The Eagles were very good in the red zone last year, so hopefully they changes. They need to capitalize on those opportunities. The Eagles are winning but they need to punch the ball in the end zone more going forward because the schedule is about to get very daunting very quickly.
But for now, the attention is on the New WJets in a very winnable game in Week 6.
