Ranger Suarez will start for the Phillies on Saturday in Game 1 of the National League Divisional Series against the Atlanta Braves.
That was a smart decision for two reasons.
First, this allows Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nolan to have extra days to rest after both had dominant performances in the series against the Marlins.
Second, both teams’ Game 2 starters can pitch again Game 5, if necessary. With Wheeler on the mound in Game 2, it’s comforting to know he would pitch a possibly deciding Game 5.
Suarez only faced the Braves once this season (June 20). He only allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings. He will need that type of outing again Saturday.
The Braves are expected to start right-hander Spencer Strider in Game 1. He led the MLB in wins (20) and strikeouts (281) this season.
A very good pitcher, the Phillies scored five runs off Strider last postseason as he only lasted three innings.
But the other times the Phillies faced Strider, he went 8-0 with a 1.90 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 47⅓ innings. The Phillies have batted .151 against in those eight games.
The offense was great against the Marlins, so hopefully that continues in the NLDS. With Nola on the mound in Game 3, the Phillies should be in good shape pitching-wise. If the offense shows up again, the Phillies could do serious damage to the team that finished with the most wins in the MLB.
First pitch Saturday in s set for 6 p.m.
