The Philadelphia Eagles did something Monday only three other teams had done since 2000 — start the season 3-0 after losing in the Super Bowl.
The Eagles are 3-0 in back-to-back seasons for the time since the 1992-93 seasons. Overall, it was massive win for the Eagles.
The Eagles lead the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders by a game in the NFC East, and the Giants by two. The Eagles, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers are the only undefeated teams in the NFL. More importantly, the Eagles are in a great spot in the conference.
But as many positives can be taken away from Monday night’s 25-11 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, some negatives can also be talked about.
“It’s a growth process. We’re not a final product yet,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “Everybody wants us to be a final product now, but it’s a growth. You want to grow every day, so we’re not going to be playing our best football until we get going into the season. We still [have] things to work on, and we still [have] growth to do.”
That’s very true.
The Eagles finished with 472 yards of offense and had 27 first downs. That’s very good. What’s not good? They only had 25 points to show for it. The Eagles left a lot of points on the field Monday. I just didn’t like seeing that. Against the Buccaneers, and with the opportunities the Eagles had, they should have at least scored 30-something.
And it wasn’t another perfect game to for Jalen Hurts. He did finish 23 for 37 with 277 yards to go with a touchdown. He also added a rushing TD. But what stood out was his two interceptions. They were bad! And let’s go even further — Hurts had just three INTs in his first 13 games in 2022. But this season? He hasn’t played a clean game yet, throwing three INTs and fumbling in the season opener.
But is it time to panic?
Nope! Not yet!
“Are we playing our best offensive football right now? No, and we shouldn’t be yet, and it’s a growth,” Sirianni said. “All the teams are growing and no one’s playing the best football that they should be playing right now. I’ve been pleased with where we are.”
Hurts involved more receivers in the passing game. Seven receivers caught passes, and he threw a beautiful 34-yard TD pass to Olamide Zaccheaus, who I was glad to see used. Listen, Hurts had good moments. He made some nice throws to Dallas Goedert and AJ Brown.
Hurts made a few great throws on the Eagles’ final drive, which chewed up over 9 minutes and ended the game. And the Buccaneers do have a good defense. Hurts hasn’t been great the first three games, but the Eagles are one of three undefeated teams in the league, and the offense is averaging 26 points and 384 yards. Hurts should be fine going forward, but the overall passing game has not instilled much confidence in me yet.
But that’s just me.
An excuse was he played with flu-like symptoms, according to NBCSports Philadelphia’s John Clark.
“I think whether we win or lose, I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied,” Hurts said Monday. “That’s always the mentality. So, there’s an eagerness always — win, lose, or draw — to get better.”
In the grand scheme of things, the Eagles are finding ways to win. And the biggest reason why they are winning has to be the defense. Like, oh my goodness. OK, it’s Baker Mayfield. He’s a turnover machine (65 career INTs and 23 fumbles) But he had no turnovers this season entering Monday. The Eagles picked him off, made him fumble and even recovered a Rachaad White fumble. They allowed 271 yards of offense… very impressive for a road game against two very good wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
The defense forced four punts— three on the Buccaneers’ first three drives— and even had a safety after an interception. The defense was phenomenal, especially the front. Jalen Carter made plays (he forced two fumbles). Sydney Brown made plays. Reed Blankenship made plays (team-high seven tackles in only his sixth career start). The Eagles covered well, pressured well and stopped the run (again). The Eagles allowed just 12 first downs. This was a dominant performance.
Speaking of dominant performances? Why did D’Andre Swift only get two carries in Week 1. After a GREAT game against the Vikings with a career-best 175 yards, Swift finished with 130 yards Monday. Swift is only the fourth Eagles RB with 130 rushing yards in two consecutive games since 1970. The other three are Wilbert Montgomery, LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown (not a typo). The Eagles better keep using him. He was always a good talent. He just had some injuries. The passing game still needs work, but Swift has the second-most rushing yards in the NFL after three weeks.
Swift looks great, and the Eagles should keep using him until there is some confidence or even consistency in the passing game.
The Eagles have another important game Sunday against the Commanders, another opportunity to gain ground in the division.
For now, the Eagles are 3-0. The defense looked great, albeit against Mayfield. Still, any win in the NFL is great. If the offense can just find its groove from last season, the Eagles could be very, very scary. Right now, the Eagles are taking care of what they need to… so there should be no complaining. Defensively, I’m happy. I know I keep saying it, but I just want to see more from the passing game. It worries me. I hope something changes in Week 4.
But for now, let’s enjoy being undefeated.
