The Washington Commanders and New York Giants put together solid comebacks Sunday.
After trailing the Arizona Cardinals 28-7, the Giants climbed back and earned a 31-28 win. The Commanders trailed the Denver Broncos 21-3, but pulled out a 35-33 victory.
Last season, only three teams had comebacks of 18 or more points. The Giants’ rally tied for the largest comeback in franchise history.
The Cardinals should be embarrassed, first off. That should not have happened. Teams should not allow that to happen… ever, and Jonathan Gannon deserves a lot of that blame. It doesn’t matter about not having Kyler Murray. It does not matter about the state of the franchise or the situation the Cardinals are in… When you are up 20-0 at halftime, you win that game.
Absolutely pathetic.
Still, the Giants should get all credit possible for staging that comeback. Daniel Jones and the defense stepped up. The defense forced Arizona to punt on its last three drives, and that was crucial in the comeback.
The Cardinals should still be ashamed.
And the Broncos are no better.
After scoring on their first three drives, the Broncos fumbled, punted twice and were intercepted on their next four drives.
Still, the Commanders just missed going to overtime after Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary for a 50-yard TD but missed the two-point conversion to tie it. Again— give credit where credit is due. It was a great win for Washington and Sam Howell.
With the Dallas Cowboys cursing past the New York Jets, the NFC East is a combined 7-1 after two weeks.
Surprised?
Well, besides the fact the Commanders and Giants should have lost, you shouldn’t be. I knew before the season the NFC East would not be easy. Granted, I wasn’t too concerned with Washington. I was more focused on the Cowboys and Giants. I was a little surprised New York looked that bad in Week 1 when Dallas shut them out.
Maybe the Giants coming from behind to beat the Cardinals isn’t that big of a deal to some people, but a win is never easy in the NFL, especially when you are losing 20-0. The same logic goes for Washington.
The Giants do have some talent and should not be taken lightly. Off that, the Cowboys are no joke, as usual the last couple seasons (well, until the December and the playoffs). OK, seriously, Dallas’ defense looks very good. Micah Parsons is probably one of the best defenders in the league.
The NFC East is winning …. again. There could easily be three playoff teams from this division. Each week will be almost must-win situations for all four teams, especially if they all keep winning (well, obviously).
What does that mean for the Eagles?
Like every team and every season, especially this early in the year, the Eagles control their own destiny. Right now, the focus is on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are also 2-0.
The Buccaneers could be a serious threat if the Eagles do not have James Bradberry or Reed Blankenship back. Buccaneers’ standout wide receiver Mike Evans just burnt the Chicago Bears. He had 171 and a touchdown. Baker Mayfield finished with 317 yards. Tampa Bay also has Chris Godwin, who is also extremely dangerous. If the Eagles are still weak in the secondary, it could be a long game. The line would need to stop Rachaad White like they did Alexander Mattison.
The Eagles’ passing game needs to improve, as well. It was great to see the rushing attack in the win over the Vikings, but this is a passing league.
Right now, the Eagles could be in some trouble if the injuries keep stacking up and the passing attack (running game is looking great) doesn’t improve and the NFC East keeps winning.
I think the Eagles are fine, though. Things will improve and they are better than the Giants and Commanders. The Eagles are better than the Cowboys, but they need their healthy secondary to beat them.
The Eagles are 2-0, so its hard to complain. But with the division winning, the Eagles have to beat the Buccaneers. The San Francisco 49ers should beat the Giants on Thursday and the Buffalo Bills should beat Washington. But Dallas will beat the Cardinals. So the Eagles have to stay at pace. Then, the Eagles play the Commanders… this is going to be an important two weeks.
Luckily, the Eagles have a long break, which should help. Hopefully, they watched film to see the adjustments teams made against them and make their own adjustments.
And remember, the Eagles had a short week before playing the Vikings. The extra rest will be very beneficial for the Eagles.
Right now, though, the Commanders, Giants and Cowboys are coming off wins and will build off that momentum.
The Eagles need to do the same.
