When healthy, Avonte Maddox is one of the top slot cornerbacks in the NFL.

The Philadelphia Eagles defender exited Thursday’s 34-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return. It’s now being reported that Maddox could miss the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Maddox also missed time last season.

The Eagles already entered the game against Minnesota with a depleted cornerback unit, missing James Bradberry, who was in concussion protocol. Possibly losing Maddox for the rest of the year could be another blow for the defense. Josh Jobe and Mario Goodrich will most likely have more significant roles, especially if Bradberry cannot return in time for the game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 25.

Last season, Maddox did not play in the Eagles’ Week 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18 and divisonal round games. Even with missing those games, Maddox finished with 43 tackles, three passes defended, one interception and a sack in 2022. He is a talented player, but he has played one full season just once in his six career NFL campaigns.

Losing Maddox will be a big loss for the Eagles. Even though he is a solid player, health is too big of a concern with him. Maddox had eight tackles (five solo), two passes defended and one forced fumble this season.
