Add it to the list.
The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Colorado Rockies 25-1 on Saturday, setting a franchise record for most runs scored in a single game and tying the record for most runs in an inning with their 13-run outburst in third inning.
That’s crazy! I mean, as someone who covers high school sports, I see a lot of huge deficits in baseball and softball games (many ending in the mercy rule). But in the MLB? Not so much.
It led me to hit the internet and see what other games in the history of the league got out of hand. The rout Saturday tied for the third-highest margin of victory since 1900 (the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 39-3 in 2007 and the Boston Red Sox won 29-4 over the St. Louis Browns in 1950).
The Angels scored 23 runs through their first four innings, which was the third-most in MLB history, behind the Cubs (25) on Aug. 25, 1922, and the Pirates (24) on June 6, 1894.
Here are some other large deficits throughout history:
- June 4, 1911: Cincinnati Reds 26, Boston Rustlers 3
- May 24, 1936: New York Yankees 25, Philadelphia Athletics 2 (Yikes!)
- Aug. 12, 1948: Cleveland Indians 26, St. Louis Browns 3
- April 23, 1955: Chicago White Sox 29, Kansas City Athletics 6
- July 7, 1923: Cleveland Indians 27 , Boston Red Sox 3
- July 30, 2018: Washington Nationals 25, New York Mets 4
On Saturday, Mike Trout went 3 for 3 with a homer, three runs and an RBI, and Brandon Drury went 3 for 5 with a homer, four RBIs and three runs. Mickey Moniak (remember him) went 5 for 5 with a homer, five runs and four RBIs, and David Fletcher went 4 for 6 with five RBIs and a homer. The Angels had 28 hits overall.
The Angles (42-36) are tied for the final AL Wild Card spot and six games back from Texas in the AL West. The Phillies host the Angels from Aug. 28-30.
Maybe the Phillies can get this kind of win one day…
