The Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia 76ers are now trading sports headlines regarding Philly sports. The Phillies are almost finished with their first month of the season, they are currently playing the Colorado Rockies, and the Sixers have a commanding 3-0 lead over the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs. Sprinkle in a little bit of Philadelphia Eagles news with franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts signing a historic contract and increasingly intense first-round draft chatter.
Philly Sports Stat of the Week: The Philadelphia Phillies have been shut out for the third time in their last six games.
It has been downright frustrating for the past week with the Phillies because there’s been a couple of wins after these shutouts where one would like, ok this team has snapped out of whatever approach they had to get shut out. It literally defies logic that this Phillies lineup was shut out this many times this early on in the season. Actually, that is a little harsh, and putting a Phillies lineup without Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins too high on a pedestal. Now it is absolutely true that this lineup of break-out young guys in Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, and Brandon Marsh along with All-Star caliber hitters J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos and last but not certainly not least potential MVP candidate Trea Turner should ever be shutout three times in the same week by the tanking Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies and the dysfunctional Chicago White Sox.
In the 13-0 shellacking from the Reds, the quartet of Turner, Schwarber, Castellanos, and Marsh went a combined 0 for 13. Oof, that was an awful loss.
Ok onto the next shutout loss, which arguably may have been worse. The Phillies didn’t record a hit until the top of the eighth on a Brandon Marsh double. Stott, Turner, Schwarber, Castellanos, Marsh, and Bohm were a combined 0 for 19 on the night. Well, at least the Phillies weren’t the first team to be no-hit in the MLB season *crosses fingers*.
The final loss was just last night against the Colorado Rockies in the Phillies’ opening game of a six-game homestand. The top seven of Stott, Turner, Schwarber, Castellanos, Marsh, Realmuto, and Bohm went a combined 5 for 26 with 12 strikeouts. Just awful stuff.
