This is not easy to write.
It normally takes me a few weeks to fully recover after an elimination loss. But after the Eagles 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, I’m going to need a a longer recovery time.
This one stings.
A lot…
The Eagles were the best team in football all season. The Eagles had a better team than the Chiefs. The Eagles led 24-14 at halftime. The Eagles led going into the fourth quarter.
This was a golden opportunity.
This was the Eagles’ chance to win.
The team was so perfect.
As much as I want to get over it, I can’t.
The Eagles should be Super Bowl champions.
There is a lot to unfold right now, but let’s start with this— Jalen Hurts is our future. If you are not in love with him yet, I feel bad for you. He finished with 304 passing yards with a touchdown and 70 rushing yards and three scores on Sunday.
He broke records all season, including in the Super Bowl. He has proven time and time again how great of a player he is. I feel physically sick for him. The defense let him down. And I don’t want to hear about his fumble for a touchdown, either. Hurts and the Eagles scored on the next two drives. If anything , the 24-year-old remained calm and, instead of letting that mistake on the biggest stage of his career get to him, he just marched on. That’s huge for a young player. Not many younger players would shake that off as easily. That’s why he’s a solid QB and a great leader.
So, if you think that cost the game, go learn football.
The defense blew it!
Down 35-27, Hurts drove down and cut the deficit to 35-33. He then ran in for the two points and tied the game.
WHERE WAS THE DEFENSE
WE NEEDED ONE STOP
And we didn’t get it.
Instant pain.
I’ve defended Jonathan Gannon all season. The defense has been amazing. I cannot defend him after Sunday. I’m done with him. Thank you, Arizona! Good riddance!
As a writer, I am even lost for words. I was so looking forward to writing a column about a glorious victory. I was very confident the Eagles would win their second championship in five years.
I guess I was wrong.
And what hurts more? The Eagles are about to lose a lot of players. Miles Sanders, James Bradberry, Fletcher Cox , Brandon Graham, TJ Edwards, Jason Kelce, Javon Hargrave and so many others are free agents. With Hurts expected to get $50,000,000 per year, I do not know who they can afford to get back.
The Eagles won’t have the same team next year And the Eagles were so dominant. Thinking about not having this same roster adds to the wound. It’s not fun right now, and it won’t be for a long time.
The positive? Hurts is our franchise QB!
The negative? A seventh-month wait.
The Eagles need a great draft and offseason.
The Eagles need to learn from this…
“You either win or you learn,” Hurts said.
The Eagles could be back next year. For now, it really, really hurts. However, we are NFC Champions… let’s look at that.
At least our team made the Super Bowl.
We lost to the MVP, and a great Patrick Mahomes.
There is always next year.
For now, the Sixers are competitive. The Phillies, the defending NL Champions, are starting soon. So, let’s turn our attention to them
Because, as always, #ItsAPhillyThing
