I am going to preface this by saying I enjoyed the majority of the time that Andy Reid was the coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. It was arguably the best era in team history in terms of consistency and longevity of being in contention. Reid planted himself in the NFL as one of the best coaches in the league and who will one day end up in Canton. But much like some athletes that played in this town (Eric Lindros, Donovan McNabb, Barkley and Iverson to name a few), the “if only” label will never leave him when looking back at his time here in Philly.
Despite the Eagles winning it all a few years ago, the sting of 2002 still exists in the back of my mind. I had never been so deflated after a loss as I was that on that night. Some would argue that losing the Super Bowl in 2004 was worse, and I can’t disagree with that either. The team was always coming up short for multiple reasons; injuries, bad clock management, poor play in key situations, a fat and slow linebacker, but the result was always the same. We felt cursed as a fan base by always getting so close yet leaving us with yet more heartache only to have the coach of the team give you the same gravelly answer, “I have to do a better job, time is yours”.
You’re damn right, Andy. Time is OURS.
Next Sunday, Big Red brings his Chiefs with him to take on the Eagles in Super Bowl 57. It’s almost as if this story will come full circle…finally. For all the heartache, pain, tears and suffering of those losses, this franchise has a chance to raise the Lombardi against its long time coach who just couldn’t bring it all home for us.
Do I sound petty? Good.
As I said on this week’s podcast I just cannot envision Andy Reid hoisting the trophy against us. Maybe it’s a mental blockage or some kind of defensive mechanism by my brain not allowing the possibility to come to the surface, but to this point, the Eagles have been the best team in the NFL, wire-to-wire. Pundits and other fan bases are hating on them, and the fact that they are one win away from shutting them all up is making this all that more exciting. But moreso, to do it against the guy who failed over and over to raise a banner here? I’m honestly salivating over the thought.
Would winning Super Bowl 57 against Reid totally erase the failures of the past? Probably not, but it would give us a nice dose of redemption. A spoonful of “here’s how YOU were supposed to do it here, Andy” while waving a finger in his face. Some would say that the past was completely erased on February 4, 2018, but not to me. Seeing green confetti rain down on our beloved Eagles for the second time in five years would help a lot though. Especially with it also pouring down on Reid as he’s hobbling his way back to the locker room.
Am I being ridiculous? Perhaps.
But I also know revenge can sometimes be very sweet. Let’s. Go. Birds.
