The tenth installment of the Philly Sports Stat of the Week is already here. That was a quick ten weeks jam-packed with incredible sports moments related to our beloved Philadelphia sports world. In this edition of the PSSOTW, I’ll be highlighting the starting linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, T.J. Edwards. The statistic for this week is 14 total tackles.
14 total tackles are how many Edwards accumulated on Christmas Eve in Jerry World against the Dallas Cowboys. Edwards recorded 8 solo tackles and 6 tackles with the assistance of his teammates. The 14 total tackle game is the second time this season that Edwards accomplished that feat this season. The other time was in the Eagles’ Week 6 26-17 win over the Cowboys. I do not think that it is a coincidence that the relentless tackling Edwards has had his best game in the tackles column against Dallas this season. Edwards seemingly playing with the knowledge and understanding that Eagles fans are yelling with a little extra juice to hit a Cowboys player and giving him an extra burst of energy to do so. As the quarterback of the defense at middle linebacker, Edwards has added an extra notch of intensity and hustle to his game against Dallas.
On top of Edwards posting his season-high total number against Dallas twice, the last performance from Edwards is the seventh time in the 2022 season that Edwards has made ten or more total tackles in a game. In my digging on T.J. Edwards’ stats, I came across that he is one of the leaders in football with total tackles. Edwards rounded out the top seven players, all linebackers, with 138 total tackles on the year. 81 of those 138 are solo tackles by Edwards. The 57 tackles are all in the assisted tackles category.
Despite the 40-34 loss on Christmas Eve to Dallas, T.J. Edwards’ performance was not at all a problem in that game. Edwards deserves praise for holding down one of the NFL’s best defenses and providing stability to a position the Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to find in recent years. Edwards is on track to have a huge role on the Eagles’ defense for years to come because of his age, he’s in his age 26 season. Certainly, Edwards plays an enormous role in the Eagles’ upcoming playoff push in January.
