The ninth installment of the Philly Sports Stat of the Week features those high-flying 2022 Philadelphia Eagles. Another observational victory lap around the club and how dominant they’ve been up until this point, Week 16. The Philly Sports Stat of the Week is 4 Eagles in the top 5 of major statistical categories. The players that rose to the top five of categories are A.J. Brown for receiving yards, Miles Sanders for rushing yards, Haason Reddick for sacks, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson for interceptions.
A.J. Brown has been an absolute, destructive joy to watch play the wide receiver position this season. In his first season in Philadelphia, Brown sits at the five spot for most receiving yards in the NFL with 1,201 yards. A.J. Brown has one distinction compared to Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs, and Davante Adams. Brown, aka “Swole Batman” has at least 20 fewer targets than all of the aforementioned wideouts. It is a pleasant surprise that Brown also has the highest amount of yards per catch out of the group.
Miles Sanders was coming into the season with some doubt. An ominous, uneasy vibe surrounding the Penn State product and his role in the Eagles’ rushing attack. The chatter about Sanders’ was that his home run ability was inconsistent and his lack of size has been an issue that has needed to be addressed. Sanders came back to the Eagles this year to become a top 5 rusher in the league. Sanders’ vision behind the Birds’ dominant offensive line and his quick first step have been able to gain him 1,110 rushing yards. Sanders’ rushing yards are good enough for the fifth most in the NFL.
If A.J. Brown is a destructive joy, then Haason Reddick is an unstoppable force. Reddick is out on NFL football fields this year terrorizing offensive linemen with simple, downhill power moves. Reddick is currently sitting at the five spot in sacks with 12 on the season. Reddick’s biceps looked like a surgeon put one in each arm that’s how much they stand out on replays of Reddick casually tossing around athletic 300-pound men. Reddick simply has done what he was brought to Philadelphia for, sack the quarterback.
Last but not least is another first-year Eagle in C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The swaggy, confident, gritty safety is the league leader in interceptions with 6 on the season. Gardner-Johnson came in this year looking for a contract at safety and an opportunity to play safety full-time. The Eagles had that position wide open for him to take by the reins. Gardner-Johnson has been the beneficiary of these interceptions despite half of them being created by other players. Gardner-Johnson has been an exceptional fit for this city and this football team.
The moral victories are worth celebrating because only one team wins the Super Bowl. It is cool to look at the standings of a sports league that is watched religiously and see multiple Philadelphia Eagles players in the top 5 of statistical categories.
