Jalen Hurts might not play Christmas Eve.
With anticipated and possibly division-clinching game on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys, the Eagles standout quarterback and MVP candidate is uncertain to take the field, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
Hurts reportedly suffered a shoulder sprain late in the third quarter Sunday during the Eagles’ 25-20 victory over the Chicago Bears.
The quarterback was running with the ball when Bears defensive end Trevis Gipson tackled him into the ground and put all of his 6-foot-4, 263-pound body on Hurts’ throwing shoulder.
Hurts did not miss any time after the hit. He finished with 315 passing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Hurts’ status was not share immediately after the game. Even after the injury, Hurts still completed passes, including a 68-yard pass to A.J. Brown.
The Eagles could clinch the NFC East title and the top-seed in the conference with a win Saturday. Not having Hurts available will definitely be a huge loss. The team would have to turn to Gardner Minshew. As an Eagle,
Minshew has started two games (1-1) and appeared in seven, throwing 473 yards with four touchdowns. His quarterback rating is 103.2. Hurts is clearly one of the favorites for MVP, but if he misses time, Minshew can still win.
Obviously, Minshew will not be a threat in the run game. But the Eagles have one of the best wide receiver groups and running back in the NFL, If the defense can play like it has, Minshew should be able to do enough.
Plus, the Eagles should win against the Saints or Giants, even if they lose to Dallas. Let Hurts rest up and heal up for the playoffs.
So, all that is fine.
What should be concerning? This can keep happening if Hurts runs 17 times or more every game. It’s great he can rush and be a threat that way. But he is going to get hurt again and again. The Eagles are lucky they dominated during the season. They are lucky his injury is not as serious.
Imagine if they actually needed to win Saturday.
This is why it was frustrating watching them not using Miles Sanders, who is having a career season, against Chicago. Please use the running back more! Hurts shouldn’t be running around as much as he is.
For now, Minshew might be the Eagles quarterback against Dallas. He can still win, but expect a much more competitive game if Hurts is sidelined.
