It was a bittersweet Thursday.
The Philadelphia Eagles earned a 29-17 victory over the Houston Texans and improved to 8-0 for the first time in franchise history. Jalen Hurts has now won 11 straight regular-season games.
After Dallas Goedert’s 4-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to extend the lead to 27-17, the Eagles were pumped, especially coach Nick Sirianni. And he was clearly animated on the sideline after that score.
A win is always great, but most already predicted the Eagles would beat the one-win Texans. The only part that was surprising was it wasn’t a blowout (well, we all know Thursday night games are weird).
But the victory seemed to be overshadowed as the happiness from the Eagles win turned into depression about an hour later.
The Phillies are one game away from elimination after a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Astros in Game 5 of the World Series.
And it was severely heartbreaking.
On a bullpen night, Noah Syndergaard actually pitched well, minus that small hiccup in the first inning. Kyle Schwarber made up for that with a solo home run to even the score 1-1. The Astros would make their lead 3-1 late, but even then the Phillies weren’t done.
In the eighth inning, Jean Segura hit an RBI single to set up Brandon Marsh with runners on first and third with one out. He struck out. Schwarber then had an opportunity, and he could not tie the game.
Harper was left stranded in the ninth to end the game.
That was the story of the game— leaving runners on base, like the Phillies have all season. Rhys Hoskins had bases loaded earlier in the game, and he did nothing (not surprising for Hoskins).
Nick Castellanos had an opportunity with a runner on, and he threw his helmet in frustration after popping out.
The Phillies left 12 runners on base Thursday.
Not good.
Now, the series heads back to Houston. The Phillies have Zach Wheeler and Ranger Suárez for Games 6 and 7, respectively. The damage has already been done, sadly. The winner of Game 5 goes on to win 66% of World Series’ championships.
Maybe a miracle can happen.
But it looks doubtful.
Still, we have the undefeated Eagles!
Hurts threw two touchdown passes, including a 17-yard pass to wide receiver A.J. Brown in the third quarter to make the score 21-14. That score was set up after C.J. Gardner-Johnson snagged his fifth interception of the season, the most in the league.
Hurts has thrown at least two touchdown passes in three straight games. The MVP candidate has 18 total touchdowns (12 passing, six rushing).
Yes, Hurts lost a fumble. But the Eagles were sloppy at times as a whole. It was their lowest scoring second quarter this season and the game was tied 14-14 at halftime. The Eagles rush defense was torched as Houston running back Dameon Pierce had 139 yards on 27 carries. They were missing Jordan Davis, but adjustments have to be made.
Was it perfect? No! But they got the win. Teams will be gunning for the Eagles now, aiming to hand them their first loss. So, everyone will play the hardest the rest of the season. Also, it was great to see the Eagles play in a close game and how they handled pressure.
Now, they get more than a week to prepare for Tyler Heinicke and the Washington Commanders. Yea, the Eagles should go 9-0.
In the meantime, maybe the Phillies can pull out a win Saturday and force a Game 7. Wouldn’t that be nice? Might be wishful thinking. No matter what happens, this season has been incredible and unexpected.
It just hurts knowing they had opportunities Thursday, and that heartbreak took away some of the happiness that the Eagles brought Philly sports fans.
Still, anything can happen.
