Anyone who’s had a conversation with me about the Flyers knows I’ve been tough on them (especially my brother Gary Shead lol) but I feel there’s good reason. Since Ed Snider passed away in April of 2016, the soul of the organization has gone away. Comcast took 100% ownership in September of 2016.
When Ed Snider was in control from 1974 to around 2010, the Flyers were a perennial playoff team. More times then not they competed for the Cup with 5 Finals appearances and 2 championships.
Claude Giroux was drafted with the 22nd overall pick in 2006. He made his NHL debut in February of 2008. His best career year was 2017-18 when he had 34 goals, 68 assists for 102 points. That season, the Flyers lost in 1st round of playoffs to the Penguins 4 games to 2.
The point I’m getting too is as long as Comcast is making money they don’t care about winning. If they did Jake Voracek would not of best goal scorer Giroux ever consistently played with. The Flyers haven’t had a consistent 40 goal a year guy since John LeClair. His last year with the Flyers was 2004!
Ron Hextall became the GM in 2014. It was a breath of fresh air. For 30 years it was the “Flyer Way” although it kept them competitive it was time for a change. Hextall traded all the top talent and rebuilt through the draft. He missed on some picks, but i think it was the right approach.
With the 5th pick in 2022 draft, the Flyers took LW Cutter Gauthier. Maybe he is the goal scorer we’ve desperately needed, but time will tell. They also made a trade to acquire the controversial D man Tony DeAngelo, and so far those have been the big moves so far this off-season.
The Flyers have assets they can trade to rebuild. Couturier, Hart, Konechny and Farabee would get you a nice haul. Personally, I feel that’s the direction they should go.
